Spring Pruning Time
My daughter, Kelli, and her husband, JC, decided to prune everything in their landscaping yesterday. Kelli doesn’t trust anybody else to do the job. I did not participate. I did show up to record the massacre. They removed a large wax myrtle and a pygmy date palm. Both were dead or dying. I had a good time photographing these cuttings. I almost fell and broke a hip climbing around in those piles, but it was fun. 😉 I hope you enjoy them.

These photographs were shot with a Nikkor Macro lens. They were post-processed using fill light, highlight, and shadows. The bright green algae on the limbs is due to the shade and to the amount of water these plantings receive. If you want to view a larger size photo, click on it.

I’m a huge fan of palms….any variety. I love the unique looks you present here. And yes, dear George, avoiding getting unnecessarily involved with work of any type is an admirable skill!

It’s sad to see all the dead bodies but I suppose that we do need to prune from time to time. I like Bark of a Dead Palm Tree With Fly. Nothing to do with the Fly which blends in, but the colours and textures, I think.

Only you could find something to photograph in the midst of pruning! I am sure you had fun even in the sun! I have to have sun-loving plants in my yard.

Beautiful photos! And I agree, the design on the wax myrtle limb would make a beautiful fabric design. Fabric for a dress….that I could wear on vacation, which I could really use about now!

Ha, I just realized it was the palm leaves and the exotic looking purple laurel that made me think of a tropical island and vacation paradise!

Oh, Dear… Now, you will be flying off to paradise leaving us to the doldrums. You are a photographer. How did I get this much color with only fill light, highlight, and shadow manipulation….and not much of that? Maybe the 85mm Macro lens? Or the sunlight? It was late afternoon. I usually photograph at night. I’m unaccustomed to dealing with color that’s already there! 🙂

Everything looks so mysterious like a botany lab in Cuba that hasn’t been updated since 1962. The one shot of the purple flowers suggests hope but also that it may be fleeting. Dark post my friend

Oh, Michael!! You are supposed to tell me how wonderful my photography is with my new lens! Dark? What is “dark” anyway? I am a nocturnal hermit. Those colors look absolutely Pollyanna-ish, sun-shiny to me! Honestly, I like dark colors and textures, I suppose. I do not have smiley faces pasted on anything that I can think of at the moment. 😉

surely you know that dark was a metaphor for mood rather than a comment on your lighting…
I like dark moods and dark spaces even where there must be light even a Chlorophyll junkie needs some dark and crusty edges sometimes. You know I am being playful George, I just dont play by rules discernible in the light

I thought your analogy was perfect. I should have thought of it myself, but of course I am not as clever as you are! I saw instantly that you were correct.
I am a pessimist at heart. I was born that way, I think. No wonder I am a nocturnal hermit…as I said. Ha! I love the dark, quiet night when nobody is afoot.

Very nice!! I wish they’d come to our yard! I thought the wax myrtle limb with green algae would be a beautiful fabric design in silk or something….just my kind of colors, etc.

Now that you mention it, my colors too! Those colors would be wonderful in silk! Kelli and JC are taking out a bunch of stuff in the back and replacing it with shade-loving plants, I think.
