Arm Guard for Parrot Keepers
As I have lamented many times,
Rita’s nails pierce my skin badly.
I’ve had rips and tears and bloody scrapes
On my arms and the tops of my hands for years.
But,
I found a solution that works perfectly.
It is Golden Needles by Ansell.
The 10″ arm socks with thumb slots are made of stretch Kelvar.
They fit snugly, stay in place, and
They are soft and comfortable for extended wear.
They provide a secure grasping surface for the parrot too.
The guards are sold in pairs of small, medium or large.

Beautiful picture of Rita – wow, what striking colours! I was once butted in the lower legs by a playful baby Thomson’s Gazelle that a friend had as a pet – and the tips of those tiny horns were like needles – Nature doesn’t mess about when it comes to sharpness! Brilliant idea. I could have used one of these when I had my cockatoo. After playing and dancing with him, I looked like a bona fide “cutter!”

Ha-ha! I can imagine! A cockatoo has bigger feet than Rita. Just balancing himself would have caused him to grip hard onto your arm. Ouch! Funny how we don’t think much about it at the time…until we see the damage! I forgot his name. Reggie? Maybe? I love cockatoos. Such sweet and beautiful creatures.

Hi, Linda! Actually, Parrots aren’t scratchers. The heavier parrots with the larger nails are hard to hold on the arm because their weight presses their nails into the skin. They don’t intend any harm and are unaware that they are hurting you. The older I get, the worse the skin damage is. I used to just daub off the blood and think nothing of it. I think Rita must wonder why I no longer say, “ouch-ouch-ouch”, as I carry her around! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by to visit us, Linda!

Yea, well my cat has no idea of the misery she’s causing either. But misery it is, even in the middle of the night when she wants to snuggle into my belly like a little nursing kitten. What we do for our pets. But oh, the rewards they give back! Belated happy birthday, btw.

Of course, she noticed. She had a fluttering fit and ran to the top of her cage when I offered my arm. I laughed at her since I hadn’t thought that she might take offense. I offered the bare arm and then transferred her to the covered arm. She liked it immediately. She realized that she could grasp the sleeve for a secure ride. She wouldn’t have paid attention if the sleeve hadn’t covered half the hand too. That was strange to her. I do stuff all the time that is rude in terms of how a parrot thinks! 🙂

Yes, the sleeve is perfect for preventing damage to the skin and providing a secure footing for her, too. Actually, parrots don’t use their feet as “weapons”. Even tiny Cheeky, the Conure, has big feet compared to her body size. Rita is heavy so her nails dig into my skin as she tries to hold on. Thanks for stopping by to visit us! 🙂

I was very glad to have found a solution! I suppose her talons could be lethal depending on what bacteria are on them when she scratches me. I used to ignore the scratch and just blot off the blood. Now, I clean the wounds. The sleeve will prevent all of that. She likes having a secure footing, too! Thanks for stopping by to visit us, Sylvia!

2/. I need those for my dogs who continually draw blood every-time the excitedly greet me… the old skin after many years of direct sun shine is now so thin that the slightest scratch turns to bleeding….

I started my blog for the children and grand children to see what Oupa was up too… it has now become just so much more than that… with followers from all over the world fascinated by what I capture… I have written a book about my younger years in the bush for the kids and the idea was the blog was for them to follow the older years… lovely to think more than family love to watch what we’re up too..

As she nears the end of the process I get more and more scared of what is to come… my writing started off as a record for the kids (requested by the kids) of my early life and experiences. Which they have heard the stories… and I never thought I’d finish it or ever send it for an edit… and now we are there I’m not sure what to expect and if there are people out there that would be interested in the life of a young man growing up in the bush of Rhodesia with all my experiences with wild animals…

Hi, Christine! I’m sure Rita wonders why I stopped saying, “ouch-ouch-ouch” every time I carry her around! At first, she was afraid of the sleeve, but I swiped her up anyway, and now she appreciates the secure footing, I’m sure. People who have companion parrots just endure the pain of the nails without thinking much about it. My skin is too old for it now, so I was really glad to have found something practical that works! Hi, Adelaide! I think people are either “Parrot People” or they aren’t. Not much in between. Chuckle. My daughter calls Rita “That Green Chicken”. They detest each other. Kelli says she loves anything with fur, but feathered-creatures belong out of doors! People are intimidated by parrot beaks, I think.
