Deaf As A Post
Charlie, you will surely have many memories of my profound deafness according to the Whispering Coldeweys.
Or, as the old folks used to say, She’s deaf as a post!
This is one of the more amusing stories about it, at least for me.
I wandered around after midnight tonight feeding the nocturnal critters in the Legend Zoo, as I always do.
As I leaned over to fetch Koko’s dishes, I heard a soft rattling noise that sounded like a rattlesnake shaking his rattles.
I stood under the smoke alarm outside the door listening with my good ear toward the ceiling.
I’m thinking Rats In The Walls, escaped Giant Ninja Roaches…
When I didn’t hear the noise again, I concluded that it must be Bats in the Belfry come home to roost.
Chuckling to myself at my own cleverness, I went on about my chores.
Later, as I was leaning into Che’s house to fill the hay bins, I heard the rattle again.
Finally, I realized that the noise came from pills rolling around in a plastic pill bottle
In the leg pocket of my Casbah pants!
You might not recall the pants. They had wide legs, reached just above the ankle,
And had deep pockets at the calf level of both legs.
I was forever losing something in the pockets.
I’m sure Che thought I was nuts when I started laughing and explaining it to him!
I asked Big Lucy if he thought I ought to recount this story, but he wasn’t speaking to me.
He’s annoyed that I posted photos of his beauty peel…
I have to tell him that Miss Spellcheck thought it was a beautiful peel.
Perhaps, that would make him feel better!

Thank you, Richard. I photograph them all the time and just cannot resist posting their photos. I think I’m like a typical grandmother collaring anybody who passes by to show my pictures of the grandchildren. Chuckle… Big Lucy is growing up very fast. He struts back and forth showing off for Little Lucy through the glass. She is a female, and I wonder if he knows that somehow? I told him that you said he should be proud, but I got the same look of disdain that I usually get. I love watching them. They really are fascinating animals. Thank you for visiting us, Richard. Hi, Ute! I haven’t kept any skin. Now, both of them shed so frequently that I can hardly keep up. They are growing by leaps and bounds, it seems. Little Lucy is so big now. I’m really delighted by her progress since I was very worried about her at first. I love photographing them and just cannot resist posting their photos! Thank you very much, Ute! 🙂

More beautiful photos of your healthy, active, and robust Dragons … beautiful animals to be sure. Am I correct that that is BL chowing down at the salad bar? He makes it all look so good. So, there are omnivores … correct? I forget what sorts of bugs you give them but, together with the roughage, that completes their diet? Sounds like a plan good enough for all of us to follow. Don’t worry about the hearing … I cannot tell you how many times during any particular week that I mistake the calls of our chickens for the call of my wife! How many times have I hollered, “What?” … at the top of my lungs, only to realize that no one called … and that I had mistaken the call of a hen or rooster for Joanna’s lovely voice! You may wonder just how that can be! Perhaps I’m getting old! D

Yes, that’s BL chowing down on Kale, I think it is. Usually, I feed shredded collard greens because of the high calcium content. They eat a remarkable amount of greens. I serve it dripping wet and replenish it during the day so that they stay well-hydrated since they don’t drink water. Yes, they are omnivores. I feed Dubia roaches, but most people probably feed crickets since they are readily available in pet stores. You have to gut-load crickets. Otherwise, they are not nutritious. Also, a dragon would eat thirty crickets to equal ten roaches. I don’t know how folks contain crickets in a habitat anyway, and they are smelly. Roaches are much easier although they are expensive to feed unless you breed your own. The dragons are fascinating animals to observe.
I understand perfectly how Joanna’s call could sound like a hen or a rooster. Chuckle… Sometimes, I think I hear more than I want to hear anyway. 🙂 Thanks, D.

I have to laugh at the “profound deafness”–mainly because I’m sure it’s “selective.” 🙂 So funny, you with the pills in your pants pocket. I love seeing these close-ups of BL and LL. The details you capture of of their faces and bodies are fascinating. I especially like the shot of the mouthful of veggies. 🙂

Well, some of my deafness really is selective, but some of it is not. I remember laughing so much at Dad’s answers to Lucy. They were absolutely hysterical. He was deafer than I am. Lucy did not think it was funny. Finally, Lucy did the same thing and made me laugh. Now, I am doing it too. It reminds me of an episode of “All In The Family”. That’s about how it goes! Thank you for the compliment on the photos. I appreciate that! I like to watch BL and LL eat their greens, too. And, they eat a lot of it. I never imagined that a desert lizard would eat veggies… I serve them very wet, so they stay well-hydrated. They don’t actually drink standing water.

You are too much…wandering around after midnight in casbah pants with pills in a pocket!!! I have a pretty bad hearing problem too, of course. Hazel finally got some hearing aids which seem to only work when he wears them for some reason. How big is “big Lucy”? Maybe I’d only be willing to hold the smaller one after all!

Big Lucy is about 15 inches long, I guess, and very wide. He looks intimidating now, really. Little Lucy is still “manageable looking”, though. And she’s sweet, unlike big boy! I wish Hazel had taken my hearing aids. They are perfectly good, state-of-the-art aids. I just don’t wear them. They could have been programmed for his hearing! 🙂

I keep both dragons on the bar behind my kitchen sink (well, Little Lucy is just below him on the counter). He prances along the glass trying to visit Little Lucy and puffing up his beard. Ha! You aren’t alone in thinking the Bearded Dragons are freaky. My daughter and my grandson both think the Beardies are creepy. Neither will touch them. They fascinate me. I don’t like reptiles, but I enjoy these critters. They are very dry and warm and soft underneath. More like mammals than reptiles. They are sentient creatures too who enjoy hearing your voice and like human contact. They make eye contact and listen to what you say to them. Big Lucy is a bit intimidating now that he’s so big, I guess. If I hadn’t handled him since he was just a sliver of a little thing, I wouldn’t pick him up either! Chuckle…

My countless hours of duty serving on flight decks of aircraft carriers and numerous flight lines full of turning & burning jet and turboprop aircraft are coming to fruition. I’m not worried, though, as there are still many notches left on the TV, radio, stereo, computer (and my guitar amp) volume buttons before the “all-the-way-up” position is reached! People are sure to be tired of all my “what” ‘s during conversations, but… that’s THEIR problem, not mine! 😀

Well, I have a pair of state-of-the-art hearing aids that I’ll give you… Chuckle… They work really well, but they do have a design flaw. They don’t work in your pocket. The funny thing is that when you say “What?”, people repeat whatever they said in the very same tone of voice. Or they shout. Finally, they decide you must be daft and give up. I think I hear more than I really want to hear anyway! 🙂

Bryn Walker makes in heavy linen and in his Pacific Cotton line of heavy cotton jersey. They are wonderful. I don’t wear anything else, but I also wear tunics, you know, so the pants work perfectly. I really did laugh when I discovered where the rattlesnake was… 🙂
