Sister Angel
Those of you who recall the post titled “Sister Angels” know how distressed I was at the vandalism that left one of the angels destroyed. A few weeks ago, I drove by the cemetery and looked over at the tombstone expecting to see only one intact angel. To my absolute delight, I saw that the ravaged angel was whole again. I could hardly believe it. A bird sat on her wing watching as if he knew and was happy too.
The destroyed sister’s head had been replaced and her wing repaired. The repairs were incomplete, but she looked wonderful to me.
The grout on her wings would require smoothing and reshaping.
Her neck repair would be smoothed and the excess grout removed when it dried. Somehow, she looked as if she were patiently waiting to be restored.
She looks perfect to me.

I am claiming that it’s the Mad Cow… I put off visiting you for when I have lots of time to read and take in the wonderful pictures because you always suggest some idea or some irresistible place for me to research further. Unfortunately, sometimes my own pressing of the like button merely reloads the page and leaves no trace, as has happened here today. You’ll just have to imagine ‘my’ beady eyeball up there with all the other gravatars.

I’m really impressed, and very glad that they repair this statues when someone destroys them, if it had happened here, probably the statue would still be in the same condition.

I love cemeteries….they are the cheapest entertainment around. I love to wander and note the dates of birth and death with the short hints on the monument about each person….who they were, who they loved and who loved them. I especially love the really old cemeteries…the ones here in Victoria qualify and you can wander and read in the stones the history of this area. The cemetery down at Indianola is especially fascinating….So many people landed there in poor health and then died. I love this angel. I had an aunt…my mother’s sister…who died in the New London School Explosion. Mother was 18 and Sarah Jane was only 12. She has a little girl angel at her grave. I have loved that angel since I was a child and would go there when I would visit my grandmother in East Texas. Beautiful pictures and a beautiful thought….an angel being repaired. Thanks for sharing.

The black and white photography is just perfect for these images. Without all the color, I can appreciate the intricate details of the carving and how the angel has worn her time. Beautiful…

Thanks, Lorna. It’s hard for me to convert most images to black and white. I “see” in color, but I know that photographs of marble and cement and statues are more effective in b&w. The sisters monument is my favorite of the tombstones in the old cemeteries here. Thank you for stopping by. 🙂

She is lovely with her imperfections! You really captured her serene beauty in the third photo where she almost looks human. I really appreciate the art in cemeteries.

Thanks, Jo Nell. I love the art in cemeteries too. Both of the sisters look almost as if they are real. They are my favorites in all of the areas of the old cemeteries here. They are seated on the Keeran family plot. I don’t know anything about the Keerans, but I am familiar with the ranch name. I am happy that they were able to restore her.

I was shocked and deeply distressed when I saw the violent vandalism, and equally excited and happy to see her restored. All is well again. Isn’t that the way of life? Hope you are doing well. It’s such an incredibly beautiful monument; it would have been a shame to have left it in such a damaged state. I’m glad you went back so we could all see that the angel is whole again.
